State Attorney Monique Worrell Provides Statement on Life Sentence in Downtown Orlando Mass Shooting
ORANGE COUNTY, FL (October 27, 2026) — Today, Jaylen Edgar was sentenced to life in prison for the horrific acts of violence that took two innocent lives and left others physically and emotionally scarred. While no sentence can undo the pain suffered by the victims, their families, and our community, this outcome ensures accountability for the devastating consequences of his actions.
My heart remains with the families of Tyrek Hill and Timothy Schmidt Jr., whose lives were taken far too soon, as well as the survivors who continue to live with the trauma of that night. They deserved to celebrate, spend time with loved ones, and return home safely. Instead, their lives were forever changed by senseless violence.
We must also recognize that this tragedy has had a profound impact on the defendant’s own family. They, too, must live with the consequences of the decisions he made. This is a painful reminder that violence reaches far beyond its immediate victims, leaving lasting scars on families and entire communities.
I want to thank the prosecutors who worked diligently to present this case, along with the Orlando Police Department, investigators, and all the law enforcement professionals whose hard work helped secure this outcome. Their commitment to pursuing justice reflects the responsibility we have to protect our community.
