FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

State Attorney Monique H. Worrell Releases Office Stats for the 1st Quarter of 2023

NINTH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT, FL (May 3, 2023) — As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency in the Ninth Judicial Circuit, the State Attorney’s office is releasing trial conviction data from the first quarter of 2023.

Our office held 65 jury trials between January 1st and March 31st—40 of which were felonies. Our prosecutors obtained a 90 percent conviction rate in the felony cases and a 77 percent conviction rate overall. Prosecutors earned convictions in all 11 felony cases tried in Osceola County, resulting in a 100 percent conviction rate. Of note, our prosecutors tried six homicides, all of which resulted in guilty verdicts. Other cases included sex crimes, drug trafficking, and violent crimes. This resulted in incarcerative sentences that ranged from two years imprisonment to nine life sentences stemming from jury trials in the first quarter of 2023.

State Attorney Monique H. Worrell released the following statement regarding the first quarter office stats:

“I am incredibly proud of our prosecutors and support staff for their tireless work on behalf of the citizens of Orange and Osceola Counties. Most importantly, our prosecutors share my vision for maintaining a balance between incarceration and rehabilitation. It is essential that we recognize when violent individuals need to be taken off the streets but must also be sensible about the need to utilize the judicial process to provide an opportunity to help those who can be productive citizens. Our office also focuses time and attention to victims of crime in Orange and Osceola Counties. Our victim advocates assist those who have suffered from a wide range of crimes and provide a variety of resources to help them heal. My job as State Attorney is to protect the citizens of Orange and Osceola Counties whether that means putting people behind bars or creating a path for them to return to society as productive members of our community. We work every day to maintain this crucial balance.”
