Paralegal Specialist III for Seals and Expungement

The State Attorney’s Office for the Ninth Judicial Circuit of Florida seeks to promote public safety by using data-driven methods to hold offenders accountable, provide restorative justice for victims, and redirect children and people in need of services, in an effort to build stronger, safer communities. We aim to achieve the highest standards of ethics and competence in order to promote a fair and equitable legal system.

We are seeking candidates who will be responsible for the prosecution of all crimes committed in Orange and Osceola Counties. These candidates should act with integrity and balanced judgment to increase public safety, be available to assist community efforts addressing problems that lead to, or result from, criminal activity and should act not merely as a case-processor but also a problem-solver, responsible for considering broad goals of the criminal legal system.

Overview:

An employee in a position allocated to this class is responsible for performing highly complex independent or supervisory paralegal assignments in support of the State Attorney or an Assistant State Attorney. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the review and legal analysis of criminal cases. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Analyzes, selects, compiles, and summarizes information on statutes, legal decisions, opinions, rulings, memoranda, or other legal material for internal use.
  • Examines and analyzes complaints and evidence of alleged or suspected violations of laws or regulations in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, rules, precedents, or policies.
  • Examines legal instruments or other documents to assure completeness of informa­tion and conformance to pertinent laws, rules, regulations, precedents, or office require­ments.
  • Undertakes direct communications with defendants in processing legal documents.
  • Assists in case preparation for criminal law proceedings and agency hearings.
  • Assists in selecting, assembling, and summarizing information on legal instruments and specific legal subjects.
  • Conducts legal research as directed.
  • Performs related work as required.

Requirements:

  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Familiarity with case management system
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive legal matters with discretion and professionalism.

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in criminal justice, legal studies, social services, or psychology or
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and successful completion of a legal assistant education program approved by the American Bar Association; or
  • Graduation from a professional school of law accredited by the American Bar Association or
  • Graduation from an accredited two-year college and successful completion of a paralegal certification.

 

Preference will be given to applicants with experience as a Paralegal in the Criminal Justice field.
