Bureau Chief of the Sex Crimes Unit

State Attorney Monique Worrell invites you to apply for the position of Bureau Chief of the Sex Crimes Unit. We are seeking a career Assistant State Attorney who is a self-starter, possesses common sense, and exercises good judgment and discretion at all times.

Position Overview:

The Sex Crimes bureau chief is responsible for the supervision and training of all sex crimes Assistant State Attorneys. This will include initial training on sex crimes statutes, case law and relevant motions when any ASA is added to the unit. The bureau chief is responsible for training ASA’s on reviewing cases for intake and approving all charging decisions until the ASA is cleared by the bureau chief. The bureau chief will supervise ASAs in court and act as a second chair as needed for new ASAs. The bureau chief will provide continuous legal education and training to all ASA’s in the unit. The bureau chief will field phone calls for review of cases from victims, defense counsel and law enforcement. The bureau chief is a liaison to all law enforcement agencies and may assist in training of law enforcement officers, 911 operators and other law enforcement staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise and train all ASAs assigned to the sex crimes unit.
  • Conduct jury trials, non-jury trials, preliminary and pretrial hearings, and other related courtroom proceedings.
  • Investigate, evaluate, and prepare cases for trial.
  • Legal research and writing.
  • Communicate with and serve as a liaison to victims, their family members, witnesses, and law enforcement personnel.
  • Must be able to work under pressure, and in high stress and/or high anxiety causing situations, both in and outside the courtroom.
  • Review law enforcement reports and evidence to determine appropriate charges and legal sufficiency for filing decisions.
  • Perform in-depth legal research and apply current statutory and case law to case assessments.
  • Work closely with fellow prosecutors, investigators, and support staff to ensure consistency and efficiency in filing decisions.
  • Adapt to evolving legal standards and internal policies with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Utilize technology and case management systems to efficiently review and track case materials
  • Familiarity with Florida criminal law, rules of procedure, and evidence.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Member in good standing with the Florida Bar.
  • 5 years of criminal litigation experience, including significant first- and second-chair trial experience.
  • Exceptional legal research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent computer skills and digital literacy, including comfort with electronic case management systems, legal research tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
  • Flexible, fast learner with a commitment to public service and legal excellence.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior prosecutorial experience, especially in intake or legal review.
  • Experience with high-volume case environments
